The futureFERNS competition is divided into four key stages of development, from the youngest children in Year 1 right through to Intermediate age children in Year 8. The modified game transforms and becomes more challenging as the players get older and continue to develop their Netball skills.

Netball New Zealand Junior Policy 2017

  • All boys may play netball alongside girls up to the age of 12 (Year 8) without restriction.
  • Boys on court at any one time should not be more than half the team.
  • Note: Year 7 & 8 boys, a maximum of 3 boys are allowed on the court at any time, with only one in each area of play i.e. GS or GA | WA, C, or WD | GD or GK.

REGISTRATIONS

Registrations for 1-6 St Johns competition will open early 2021

 

 

Years 1 & 2

Information 

  • Game times: Thursday 4.00pm | 4.45pm
  • 19 minute skill session followed by a game
  • 4 v 4 game with a maximum of 8 per team
  • Rolling subs
  • Played across 1/3 of a netball court
  • Play with a 20cm textured playground ball
  • Goal post at 2.1m or handheld hula hoops
  • Each team must be accompanied by a coach or parent helper each week
  • Excellent for first time coaches to learn in a supportive environment
  • Year 1&2 Coach Workshops – Full training is provided for coaches – please see Coach Development page for upcoming dates

Years 3 & 4

Information

  • Game times: Thursday 4.00pm | 4.55pm | 5.50pm
  • 14 minute skill session followed by a game
  • 5 v 5 (recommend 7 players per team)
  • Rolling subs
  • Played across 2/3 of a netball court
  • Play with a size 4 ball
  • Goal post 2.6m
  • Each team must be accompanied by a coach or parent helper each week
  • Year 3&4 Coach Workshops – Full training is provided for coaches – please see Coach Development page for upcoming dates

Years 5 & 6

Information

  • Game times: Thursday 4.00pm | 4.55pm | 5.50pm  |  6.45pm
  • 15 minute time on court for warm up followed by a game
  • 6 v 6 (recommend 8 players per team)
  • Rolling subs
  • Played on a full size netball court
  • Play with a Size 4 ball
  • Goalposts at 2.6m
  • Games will be 32 minute duration – 4 x 8 minute quarters
  • Positions include 2 attacks, 2 defence and 2 centres
  • No results tables
