Year 1-8 futureFERNS Mt Eden

The futureFERNS competition at Windmill Park, Mt Eden is divided into four key stages of development, from the youngest children in Year 1 right through to Intermediate age children in Year 8. The modified game transforms and becomes more challenging as the players get older and continue to develop their Netball skills.

  • Year 1-4 playing days: Thursday afternoons from 14 May – 27 August (No play 9,16 and 23 July)
  • Year 5-8 playing days:Wednesday afternoons from 13 May – 6 August (No play 8, 15 and 22 July)
  • Year 7 & 8 ….Monday afternoons from 4 May – 24 August (No play 1 June, 6, 13 and 20 July)

Key Information

Year 1 & 2

  • Game Times: 4.00pm | 4.45pm
  • 19 minute skill session followed by a game
  • 4 v 4 game with a maximum of 8 per team
  • Rolling subs
  • Played across 1/3 of a netball court
  • Play with a 20cm textured playground ball
  • Goal post at 2.1m or handheld hula hoops
  • Each team must be accompanied by a coach or parent helper each week
  • Excellent for first time coaches to learn in a supportive environment
  • Year 1&2 Coach Workshops – Full training is provided for coaches – please see Coach Development page for upcoming dates.

Year 3 & 4

  • Game Times: 4.00pm | 4.55pm | 5.50pm | 6.45pm
  • 14 minute skill session followed by a game
  • 5 v 5 (recommend 7 players per team)
  • Rolling subs
  • Played across 2/3 of a netball court
  • Play with a size 4 ball
  • Goal post 2.6m
  • Each team must be accompanied by a coach or parent helper each week
  • Year 3&4 Coach Workshops – Full training is provided for coaches – please see Coach Development page for upcoming dates.

Year 5 & 6

  • Game times: 4.00pm | 4.45pm | 5.30pm | 6.15pm
  • 15 minute time on court for warm up followed by a game
  • 6 v 6 (recommend 8 players per team)
  • Rolling subs
  • Played on a full size netball court
  • Play with a Size 4 ball
  • Goalposts at 2.6m
  • Games will be 32 minute duration – 4 x 8 minute quarters
  • Positions include 2 attacks, 2 defence and 2 centres
  • No results tables
  • Year 5&6 Coach Workshops – Full training is provided for coaches – please see Coach Development page for upcoming dates.

Year 7 & 8

  • Game times: 4.00pm | 4.45pm | 5.30pm | 6.15pm
  • 15 minute time on court for warm up followed by a game
  • 7 v 7 (recommend 10 players per team)
  • Substitutions during an interval or when play has stopped for injury/illness
  • Minimum of half a game per game
  • Provide opportunities for players to play a variety of positions
  • Played on a full size netball court
  • Play with a Size 5 ball
  • Goalposts at 3.05m
  • Games will be 40 minute duration – 4 x 10 minute quarters
  • GK, GD, WD, C, WA, GA, GS
  • Scores taken for competition points table

Boys in futureFERNS Netball

Netball New Zealand Junior Policy 2017

  • All boys may play netball alongside girls up to the age of 12 (Year 8) without restriction.
  • Boys on court at any one time should not be more than half the team.
  • Note: Year 7 & 8 boys, a maximum of 3 boys are allowed on the court at any time, with only one in each area of play i.e. GS or GA | WA, C, or WD | GD or GK.
