7 April 2020
These are challenging times for us all as we enter day 13 of the enforced lockdown. A little over a fortnight ago we were looking forward to the start of the 2020 season – no more; this is now on pause. Life has changed; we trust you have all navigated/adapted to the challenges and settled into a safe and secure routine within your “bubbles”.
Many may be wondering what the future holds for the game of netball at Auckland Netball Centre. Be assured your Auckland Netball Board and Management are working hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on our game for both staff and players. Without doubt, the potential loss of the winter season will have a dramatic impact on our business.
We were saddened to learn on Saturday that Netball Mainland Zone went into voluntary liquidation due to the extreme financial pressure it found itself under because of the impact of COVID-19. Fortunately, we are in a relatively strong financial position to initially weather the storm but will need to manage our situation prudently and carefully over coming weeks to protect that position. We are taking all possible measures to ensure our viability; key will be the support of our management and staff to be flexible and agile; do not underestimate the work and dedication going into managing the situation.
Over the weekend, you may have read on stuff.co.nz Netball NZ outline the crippling effects the loss of revenue will have on the game nationally. Unfortunately, netball is not alone with many sporting bodies in the country facing a similar challenge.
Our highest priority is to protect netball for the community and the future of the game in Auckland; this is our undertaking to you all. We will keep you updated over coming weeks as this situation progresses.
In the meantime, stay home, save lives – we’re all in this together.
